White Opal
A white opal, also known as the milky opal, are solid pieces with a white to a light grey background. The color generally comes from quartz, which is the same mineral as opal, and generally runs from opaque to translucent. As with any opal that is gem quality, white opals can display any color of the spectrum in their play of color.
White opals are more common than other kinds of opals, such as the Mexican opal or the black opal. Therefore, they are less valuable due to the fact that they appear pale in comparison, and thus the play of color is less evident. However, good quality white opals can be incredibly beautiful and fetch prices of up to $400.00 per carat.
